F. Tan: Merhaba. Seni biraz tanıyabilir miyiz?

M. P. Leis: Evet, paylaşmaktan mutlu olurum. Albuquerque, New Mexico, ABD'de yaşayan ve çalışan ve bütün ömrünü sanata adamış biriyim.

F. Tan: Alaylı mı? Bir sanat okulundan mısınız?

M. P. Leis: New Mexico Üniversitesi'nden stüdyo sanatı alanında yüksek lisans derecelerine sahibim ve diğer kurumlarda okudum ve öğretmenlik yaptım. Ayrıca seyahatlerim esnasında veya sanatçı misafir olarak bulunduğum yerlerde ustalık dersleri vermeyi seviyorum.

F. Tan: İşinizde hangi teknikleri kullanıyorsunuz?

M. P. Leis: Disiplinler arası bir sanatçıyım ve sanatım indirgemeci soyutlamalardan ibaret. Kullandığım araçlar resim, çizim, baskı, heykel, video, fotoğraf. Üzerinde çalıştığım dizinin veya serginin konusu veya niyeti, hangi ortamları veya ortamları kullandığımı belirler.

F. Tan: Pandemi (Covid 19) sürecinde sanatsal faaliyetlere katılabildiniz mi? Covid 19 sizi ve çevrenizi nasıl etkiledi?

M. P. Leis: Stüdyo pratiğimi sürdürdüm ve 3 yeni çalışma serisini tamamladım. Bir süreliğine her şey iptal edilmiş olsa da internette pek çok etkinlik vardı; stüdyo ziyaretleri, video röportajları ve Zoom toplantıları ve değişimleri. Ayrıca ZOOM ile dünyanın her yerinden insanlarla şiir yazdım ve paylaştım. Canlı sanat, 2020 sonbaharında başladı ve galeriler virüs protokollerini uygulama konusunda çok yenilikçiydi. Diğer sergiler 2021'de yeniden planlanmaya başlandı.

F. Tan: Ülkenizde sanata ve sanatçıya bakış açısı nedir?

M. P. Leis: Tek bir bakış açısı yok, bu topluma bağlı. New York, Los Angeles ve şimdi de New Mexico'da yaşıyorum.  Sanat ve sanatçılarla dolu her yerde ben varım. New Mexico'da, Yerli Amerikalıların sanatları ve ayrıca İspanyol sanatları nedeniyle uzun, saygın bir sanat tarihi vardır. Çağdaş sanatın da daha küçük bir izleyici kitlesi ve beğenisi var.

F. Tan: İnsanlar sanatçıyı nasıl görüyor? İnsanların sanata bakışından memnun musunuz?

M. P. Leis: ABD daha çok statü takıntılı bir ülkedir ve bu yüzden finansal güvencesi olmadan, kariyer seçen insanlar, çok başarılı olmadıkları sürece fazla değer görmezler. Bununla birlikte, bu yolu seçmeye cesaret eden biri için de saygı duyulmaktadır. Yine de gittiğiniz her yerde dost canlısı bir toplum buluyorsunuz.

Kendi yolumu izledim ve durumumla ilgilenmedim. Seçimim bana takdire şayan bir şekilde hizmet etti. Gençleri, finansal ihtiyaçlarını karşılayan bir hayatı bir araya getirmeye hazır olmaya teşvik ediyorum. Hepsi bir sanat hayatı.

F. Tan: Bir sanatçı olarak, sanatınızı ve kendinizi gelecekte nerede görüyorsunuz?

M. P. Leis: Şimdi sanatımın ve kariyerimin bir antolojisini hazırlamakla meşgulüm. Bir yayın ekibiyle çalışıyorum ama yine de 50+ yıllık bir kariyeri derleyen çok iş var. Ağaç temalı bir şiir ve sanat kitabı üzerinde de çalışıyoruz. Aklımda bu yıl başlayacak birkaç sanat serisi var.

F. Tan: Çalışmalarınızda en çok hangi temayı kullanıyorsunuz?

M. P. Leis: Çevre, 'yer duygusu' ve 'yerin rengi'… Gezegenimizin ve kozmosun güzelliğinden çok etkileniyorum ve onu korumaya yatırım yapıyorum.

F. Tan: Sanatın insanlar üzerindeki gücüne inanıyor musunuz?

M. P. Leis: Evet, insanlar sanattan etkilenir. Şüphesiz, bilinçaltı olsa bile. Bazen insanlar olumsuz tepki verebilir ve veriyorlar da. Sanat uyandırabilir, ilham verebilir, önderlik edebilir, eğitebilir. Benim sanatım sessiz, düşünceli ve eğer bir izleyici sanata boyun eğebilirse susturabilir, durabilir ve bu onları aydınlatabilir.

F. Tan: Her çocuğun sanata yönlendirilmesi gerektiğini düşünüyor musunuz?

M. P. Leis: Evet, bazı çocuklar diğer öğretim biçimlerinde başarısız olduğunda, görsel öğrenmede başarılı olabilirler. Zihin egzersizinin eli. Ayrıca çocukları, yaşamları boyunca onlara hizmet edecek estetiğe maruz bırakır. Güzelliğin tadını çıkarmanın ve yaşamanın bir yoludur bu.

F. Tan: Çocukların ve gençlerin sanatınıza bakış açısı nedir?

M. P. Leis: Küçük çocuklar, kelimelere ihtiyaç duymadan sadece renge ve biçime cevap verme konusunda oldukça iyidirler.  Zaten "öğretilmiş" daha büyük çocuklar, sanata alışmak için hikayelere ve açıklamalara ihtiyaç duyar.

F. Tan: Toplumun gelişimi ile sanat arasında bir bağlantı olduğunu düşünüyor musunuz?

M. P. Leis: Evet. Sanat toplumu yansıtır. Sanat da geleceği öngörüyor. Sanatımın gürültülü dünyamızdan bir dinlenme sağlama ihtiyacını karşıladığına inanıyorum.

F. Tan: Bir resim yapılırken sizde ve tuvalde nasıl bir macera yaşanıyor?

M. P. Leis: Yaratırken tamamen odaklandım, tamamen mevcudum. Gerekli olanı derinlemesine dinlemeye başlıyorum. İleriyi düşünmüyorum, varsayımda bulunmuyorum. Boyun eğiyorum "şimdi" içindeyim. Neyin ortaya çıktığını görmek için de heyecanlanıyorum.

F. Tan: Niğde hakkında ne biliyorsun?

M. P. Leis: Türkiye'nin merak ettiğim ve ziyaret etmek istediğim bir bölgesi. Safa Büte'nin, fotoğrafları ve olayları görsel olarak çevrimiçi yayınlayarak daha çok tanıtmasını seviyorum, beni cezbediyor. Bir ülkenin merkez bölgelerinin dışındaki yerler her zaman gerçekleri ve gizemleri içerir.         

F. Tan: İleride Niğde'ye gelmeyi düşünüyor musun?

M. P. Leis: Covid-19, 2020'de Türkiye'yi ziyaret etme planlarımı değiştirdi. Bu, üzülerek Türkiye'yi ziyaret etme planlarını ikinci kez iptal ettim. Türkiye'nin benim için büyük bir önemi var, oraya gideceğim ve Niğde'ye de gideceğim. Belki 2021'de.

F. Tan: Türkiye hakkında ne düşünüyorsun? Daha önce geldiniz mi?

M. P. Leis: Hayır. Ama hep rüyalarımı süslüyor.

F. Tan: Türkiye'de en çok görmek istediğiniz şehir neresi?

M. P. Leis: Tabii ki İstanbul, Doğu ve Batı, tarih vb. nedenlerle olmazsa olmazdır ama Kapadokya bölgesi Niğde ile olmazsa olmazdır.

F. Tan: Bir sanatçı gözünden bize konumunuzdan (şehriniz, köyünüz veya ilçeniz) bahseder misiniz?

M. P. Leis: Çok kültürlü bir ortamda yaşıyorum. Hispanik, yerli Amerikalı ve beyaz popülasyonlarımız var. Tarihte çeşitli ve zengin. Ayrıca kocaman gökyüzü, dağlar ve ovalarla dolu yüksek çölde yaşamanın fiziksel güzelliği de her zaman gözler için bir ziyafettir. Bu faktörler ruha ve sanatçıya ilham veriyor. Zorlukları olan, ancak gelenekler ve fiziksel özellikler açısından çok zengin ekonomik olarak fakir bir yerdir. Ama asla sıkıcı değildir.

F. Tan: Hello. Can we get to know you a little bit?

M. P. Leis: Yes, very happy to share. I’m a lifetime artist living and working in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA.

F. Tan: Are you a self-educated artist? Or from an art school?

M. P. Leis: I have graduate degrees in studio art from the University of New Mexico and have studied and taught at other institutions. I also love to teach master classes when I travel or do artists residencies.

F. Tan: Which techniques do you use in your works.

M. P. Leis: I'm interdisciplinary artist and my art is reductive abstractions. The mediums I employ are painting, drawing, prints, sculpture, video, photographs. The subject or intention of the series or exhibit I am working on dictates what mediums or mediums I use.

F. Tan: Have you been able to participate in artistic activities during the pandemic (Covid 19) process? How did Covid 19 affect you and your environment?

M. P. Leis: I have kept my studio practice and have completed 3 new series of work. Although everything was canceled for a while there were many activities online; studio visits, video interviews and Zoom meetings and exchanges. I also wrote and shared poetry with people all over the world by ZOOM. Live art started up in the fall of 2020 and galleries were very innovative in practicing the  virus protocols. Other exhibits started to be rescheduled in 2021.

F. Tan: What is the perspective of art and artist in your country?

M. P. Leis: There is no one perspective, it would depend on the community. I have lived in New York City, Los Angeles and now New Mexico —all places infused with art and artists. In New Mexico there is a long history and respect of art because of the Native Americans arts and also the Hispanic arts. Contemporary art has a smaller audience and appreciation.

F. Tan: How do people view the artist? Are you satisfied with people's view of art?

M. P. Leis: The USA is rather status obsessed so people that choose a career that has no financial security is not well thought of unless you are very successful. However there is a curiosity and perhaps even respect for someone who dares to choose this path. You do find a friendly tribe everywhere you go though.

I have followed my own path and have not concerned myself with my status. My choice has served me admirably. I encourage young people to be prepared to cobble together a life that provides for their financial needs. It is all a life of art.

F. Tan: As an artist, where do you see your art and yourself in the future?

M. P. Leis: I’m engaged now in preparing an anthology of my art and career. I am working with a publishing team but it is still a lot of work compiling a career of 50+ years. We are also working on a book of poetry and art with a theme of trees. There are several art series that I have in mind that will begin this year.

F. Tan: Which theme do you use most in your works?

M. P. Leis: The environment, the ’sense of place’ the ‘color of place’….I’m very moved by the beauty of our planet and the cosmos and invested in preserving it.

F. Tan: Do you believe in the power of art over people?

M. P. Leis: Yes, people are influenced and moved by art. No doubt about that. Even if it is subconscious. Sometimes people may respond negatively but they are responding. Art can awake, inspire, lead, educate. My art is quiet, contemplative and if a viewer can yield to the art they can quiet, pause and that can enlighten them.

F. Tan: Do you think every child should be directed to art?

M. P. Leis: Yes, Some children can find success in visual learning when other form of teaching fail them. It is the hand to the mind exercise. Also it exposes children to aesthetics which will serve them throughout their life—a way to enjoy and live in beauty.

F. Tan: What is the perspective of children and young people to your art?

M. P. Leis: Young children are quite good about simply responding to the color and form-not needing words. Older children who have already been ’taught’ need stories and explanations to settle down in the art.

F. Tan: Do you think there is a connection between the development of society and art?

M. P. Leis: Yes. Art reflects the society. Art also foresees future. My art I believes fulfills a need to provide rest from our noise world.

F. Tan: What kind of an adventure takes place in you and on the canvas while a painting is being created?

M. P. Leis: When creating I am completely focused-completely present. I enter into a place of deep listening-listening to what is needed. I am in the ’now’ not thinking ahead, not presuming—yielding. Also excited to see what unfolds.

F. Tan: What do you know about Niğde?

M. P. Leis: It is an area of Turkey I am curious about and have wanted to visit. I love that Safa Bute makes it more known to me by visually posting pictures and events online, tempting me. Places outside the central regions of a country always contain the realities and mysteries.

F. Tan: Do you plan to come to Niğde in the future?

M. P. Leis: The Covid-19 changed my plans to visit Turkey in 2020. That was the second time I had regrettably cancel plans to visit Turkey. Turkey has a huge draw for me and I will get there and I will get to Nigde. Perhaps in 2021.

F. Tan: What do you think about Turkey? Did you come in before?

M. P. Leis: No only in my dreams!

F. Tan: Where is the city you most want to see in Turkey?

M. P. Leis: Of course Istanbul is a must because of the East and West, history etc.. but the Cappadocia region is a must with Nigde.

F. Tan: Can you tell us about your location (your city, village or town) from the perspective of an artist?

M. P. Leis: I live in a multi-cultural state. We have hispanic, native American and caucasian populations. Diverse and rich in history. Also the physical beauty of living in the high desert with big big skies, mountains and plains is always a feast for the eyes. These factors make it inspiring for the soul and for the artist. It is an economically poor state with challenges but very rich in traditions and physical attributes. It is never boring. It stimulates.
